SeaSafe Bangladesh

SeaSafe is a joint initiative launched in 2013 through a collaboration between the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) and the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) with the primary goal of reducing the risk of drowning in the coastal areas of Cox’s Bazar. This project is generously supported by the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation. SeaSafe focuses on four key components: 24/7 lifeguard services, targeted water safety education, beach safety education for tourists, and free-swimming lessons for children aged 6 to 10.

To ensure beach safety, SeaSafe deploys 27 trained lifeguards across three popular beaches, providing prompt rescue assistance during the day. Water safety education programs target at-risk schoolchildren and communities, raising awareness and equipping them with preventive measures. Beach safety education initiatives inform tourists about risks such as rip currents, tidal changes, and the importance of lifeguarded areas. Free swimming lessons are provided to children aged 6-10 to develop their confidence, skills, and understanding of water safety practices.

Additionally, the Bhasa project is a comprehensive drowning prevention plan implemented in three Upazilas: Kalapara, Betagi, and Taltoli in the Barishal Division. Based on the findings from the 2005 and 2016 Bangladesh Health and Injury Surveys, it was identified that the Barishal Division is the most drowning-prone area in the country, with children aged 1-4 and 5-9 being the most vulnerable groups. The project aimed to reduce child drowning by 40% and implemented evidence-based interventions tested in Bangladesh and recommended by the World Health Organization.
