The Monaco Impi’s will participate in the Melrose Sevens 1883 Centenary Cup Competition in Scotland
The Monaco Impi’s Invitational Rugby 7s team will participate in the 1883 Centenary Cup Competition of the Melrose Sevens Tournament in Melrose, Scotland in April 2023.
The Impi’s (meaning “warriors” in the Zulu language) was created to hold the colours of the Monaco Rugby Federation and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation in international invitational tournaments. Bringing together players from different nationalities, the team is an opportunity for young Monegasque players to improve and learn in contact with teammates and opponents of an international level.
Since their first outing in December 2017, the Impi’s have participated in multiple editions of the Emirates Dubai 7s Tournament in both Invitational categories (International Invitation and International Open).
The Federation, which is focused on the development of sevens rugby in the Principality and abroad, is in regular partnership with the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation for the promotion of rugby worldwide and the education of children through the values of sport.
Gareth Wittstock, Honorary President of the Monaco Rugby Federation and Secretary General of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, is very enthusiastic about this new challenge for the Impi’s:
“The Melrose Sevens Tournament is where it all began, and it is a formidable return to the roots of sevens rugby for us. In Monaco, this unique discipline is very important and it is at the core of the Rugby Federation’s missions. The Monaco Impi’s was born to represent both the Federation and the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation in international tournaments, bringing together young Monegasque players in contact with teammates and opponents of a higher level. In 2017, when H.S.H. Princess Charlene created the Impi’s, her vision was to inspire this young generation of athletes to learn from the sport’s best – and grow to love the game.
Melrose is a great opportunity for us to test our skills, and to show our strength and versatility on the pitch. We are looking forward to competing against fantastic teams under Scottish skies.”
The Melrose Sevens begins on Thursday, April 6th, 2023. The pre-qualification tournament and U18’s tournament will be held on Friday, April 7th, and the traditional Melrose Sevens event will take place on Saturday, April 8th.
