The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation supports the Safe Greece project in Greece, initiated by the Greek government in response to a very high drowning rate in the country.
Notably through the organization of summer camps in the Athens region, “Safe Greece” offers educational activities very popular with young people, at sea or in the pool.
The water safety lessons, always prepared and taught by Dr. Stathis Avramidis (member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, professor of rescue at the University of Athens and officer of the National Public Health Organization), allow children and adults to acquire a better knowledge of the risks and to develop the right safety reflexes in water environments.
In 2020, the Greek Lifesaving Sports Association (GLSA) took over the project and restarted the camps in July, not without difficulties following the health restrictions put in place in Greece that year.
The GLSA, chaired by Dr. Avramidis, is a new entity whose main purpose is to promote water safety and lifesaving sports throughout the country. In its first year of existence and given the context, the association has demonstrated an exceptional record – attesting to the passion and determination of its leaders, highlighting the importance of water sports and giving hope for the future of lifesaving in the country.
Project goals:
To allow children and adults to acquire a better knowledge of the risks and to develop the right safety reflexes in water environments.
To teach the basics of survival swimming and lifesaving, in a pool or outdoors.
To train lifeguards and lifesaving professionals.
children followed courses on practice and/or theoretical drowning prevention in 2021
adults were trained to give drowning prevention courses
